After trending on Weibo over a hundred times, on the afternoon of January 19th, Xiaohongshu (RedNote) officially announced that users can enjoy a one-click translation feature following an app update. This new function supports translations not only for common languages like English, Japanese, Korean, French, and German, but it can also accurately translate Chinese internet slang and abbreviations, such as "yyds" (meaning "the best ever") and "xswl" (meaning "LOL"). Remarkably, users have reported that even Morse code is translatable within the comments section.
The development team has been working tirelessly to roll out what they claim is the "strongest translation feature ever." It seemed that Xiaohongshu was poised to break into the international market as a global platform. However, early Monday morning, TikTok issued a statement on social media announcing that the company has reached an agreement with internet service providers and is restoring related services.
Following this announcement, it was observed that many foreign users on Xiaohongshu began to cancel their accounts and exit the platform. Is Xiaohongshu losing international attention? Are TikTok refugees returning home? By the evening of January 20th, a check by the report revealed that the TikTok app and website were functioning again.
However, many Xiaohongshu users with overseas IPs expressed their desire to remain on the platform, citing a growing distrust toward the ever-changing policies of TikTok.
Since the ban on TikTok, a substantial influx of users—dubbed "TikTok refugees"—has flocked to Xiaohongshu in less than a week. During this time, some users have been rubbernecking, while others have luckily reconnected with old friends across the ocean through Xiaohongshu. The platform has also seen a rapid rise in international e-commerce, MCN operations, and promotional activities by big companies, all spurred by new arrivals.
Nevertheless, whether TikTok will truly be unbanned in the U.S. remains an open question.
